Basic Water Needs Foundation

Basic Water Needs Foundation (BWNF) focuses on the development of

  • low-cost water purification technologies for communities;
  • low-cost ceramic water purification units for family use;
  • an awareness campaign about safe drinking water.

Recently, a BWNF pilot project for a community water supply was successfully completed at a village in India. The project provides safe drinking water that is now being sold for only € 0.01 per 20 liters. The installation of more water purification units in Southern India will begin in the near future. These units will cost about € 500 and have a capacity of 4,000 liters per day. Nearly all of the components needed for the water purification units are manufactured in India.

In addition, BWNF has developed a new type of ceramic water filtration unit for family use. This filtration unit is capable of delivering around six liters of safe drinking water per hour and will cost about € 2. A pilot project involving as many as 1,000 Indian families has been planned for December 2006.
