PRACTICA Foundation
Appropriate Technologies (AT) implemented in the right way can yield many benefits, such as a doubling of annual income for rural families. A well-known example is the Treadle irrigation pump. It costs only $20 and generates $100 in net income per year; it is currently used by 2 million families in Asia. Other examples include solar disinfection, ceramic water filters costing $10, Easy-drip irrigation, and locally-produced Rope pumps, which cost five times less than imported pumps and are more reliable.
What PRACTICA does
PRACTICA is a non-profit organization active in the dissemination of appropriate water and energy technologies for rural development in Africa, Asia and Latin America. PRACTICA is also involved in the research and development of new AT.
PRACTICA considers a technology to be appropriate if it truly improves rural livelihoods in a sustainable way, if it can be produced and repaired locally and marketed through the private sector, and if it is affordable, well-accepted and accessible for the target group. Examples of AT that we promote include:
- Rota-sludge and Stone-hammers for manual well drilling;
- Rope pumps: manual, animal-driven, wind-driven and motorized versions;
- Riser clamp for deep well piston pumps;
- Nica-drip and Easy-drip irrigation systems;
- Fuel-efficient motor pumps for irrigation;
- Ceramic-silver filters for point of use (household) water treatment;
- Solar pumps and Micro diesel.
