Aqua for All

Aqua for All (A4A) is a Dutch-based NGO that was founded by public and private parties from the water sector in the Netherlands. A4A aims to provide access to safe drinking water and adequate household sanitation for the poor by supporting drinking water and sanitation projects in developing countries. It does this by providing financing, means and expertise. The A4A projects focus on rural and peri-urban (unpiped) areas.

A4A can be described as a network organization that enables existing partner programs of Dutch NGOs and their partners in the South to implement water and sanitation projects with expertise and financing from the Dutch water sector. All projects must meet the added-value criterion.

The overall objective of A4A is to contribute to the realization of MDG number 7, target 10: “Access to safe drinking water and adequate household sanitation in a sustainable setting.”

In 2004, A4A took the initiative to agree upon an Appropriate Technology (AT) approach within the NWP-NGO platform. By means of discussions and workshops, a protocol on AT was formulated, which defines the six basic characteristics of Appropriate Technology.

A4A is member of the Fresh Water Innovators Network, a network of Dutch innovators of small-scale AT solutions. A4A also supports the BID Challenge, an initiative of NCDO, for empowering and challenging Business in Development. Finally, A4A initiated the AT@Work network in cooperation with EMF, Practica, IRC and other partners.
