TNO Science & Industry is a knowledge and contract research institute with a staff of over 1,000, and offices in the Dutch cities of Delft, Eindhoven, and Apeldoorn.

The TNO organization is widely knowledgeable in the field of water treatment, carrying out innovative projects for process industry and governmental authorities, including:

• Urban and industrial water cycles: analyzing and evaluating different possibilities for water management
• Producing water from alternative water sources
• Production of very pure water from sea water in one step using (waste) heat (Memstill)
• Avoiding biological fouling without using chemicals in membrane filtration processes and cooling water systems
• Treatment of concentrates and retentates of membrane filtration techniques
• Water softening by means of innovative crystallization techniques
• Chemical and electrochemical conversion processes
• Management of Legionnaire’s disease in water systems.
• Removing micropollutants from water by means of affinity adsorption, or extraction (pertraction).
• Membrane bioreactors for treatment of industrial effluents, with very high performance as to compactness and removal of contaminants and micro-organisms.

The initiative for developing technology can be launched by TNO or the customer. TNO collaborates with customers and other organizations to further develop new concepts and ideas. TNO’s partnerships with other research institutions guarantee the constant availability of up-to-date knowledge and project performance.
