Arrakis
ARRAKIS is an organization which concentrates on the stimulation of sustainable development. Its focus is on human resources and institutional development, as well as development and transfer of affordable technologies in the field of renewable energy and safe water supply in rural areas of countries, which are ranked at the lower end of the Human Development Index (HDI list of UNDP). ARRAKIS, has built up a long record of activities in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, since 1990.
With a core group of closely related professionals, the ARRAKIS Team of Associates, who are based in the Netherlands, Botswana, India and Egypt, is developing innovative pilot projects and programmes that can lead to successful socio-economic development taking into account improvement of the environment as well. ARRAKIS has built up a valuable network of counterparts worldwide, and is focussing since 2003 on Africa with the objective to contribute to the realization of the MDG’s, specifically on supplying access to safe drinking water and generating income possibilities, to fight poverty, hunger and health problems.
Typical ongoing project:
A pilot project funded by “Partners voor Water”, named “Transfer of technology and market introduction of affordable water supply systems to smallholders” is being executed from April 2006 to November 2007.
In this project small companies and institutes in Mozambique are trained by Arrakis to produce, install and market technologies such as wind rope pumps, hand rope pumps, manual drilled tube wells, recharge systems, drip irrigation systems, low cost brick cement tanks and well heads and ceramic siphon filters.
